New Experiences

After we had breakfast at the hotel, we walked a couple of blocks to the subway! We bought our Metro cards, found where we needed to go and boarded the subway for Ground Zero.

We stopped at St. Paul's Church to see where all of the rescue and volunteer personal were housed, fed and ministered to after 9/11. They have removed all of the pews from inside the church except for George Washington's pew that he used when he was inaugurated as our first President.

This is the Hope Bell that was given by the people of France; it is rung each Sept. 11 and also been rung after the other major terrorist attacks around the world.

We then walked over to where they are constructing the 9/11 memorial and other buildings where the World Trade Center towers once stood.

We took the subway to the closest stop to the Intrepid. It started raining along the way, so we had to stop for a purchase!

The Intrepid is a WWII era aircraft carrier. It saw extensive action in the pacific, survived numerous Kamikaze attacks, and played an important part in the winning of the Pacific campaign. The ship served our country during ther Korean and Vietnam Wars and was decommissioned in 1974.

****Sat., July 4, 2009...Just learned that Bob landed on the Intrepid 10 times during his Navy training.

Also part of the exhibits was a Concorde airliner. We were able to go inside plane and see how people flew in it across the Athlantic.

Finally, we were able to tour a cold war era submarine, the Growler. It was the first of the nuclear missle attack models that was used during the 1950's and 1960. Mike said that it didn't take long in the tour to remind him why he wasn't a Navy Submariner. Things were really close.

We returned to the room for a rest and shower and then went to a neighborhood "dive" for supper. It advertised Tex-Mex and was served by an Asian!
Along the way I saw these people eating their pizza like New Yorkers do...standing at a tall table and folding their pizza.

We're off to see Shrek tonight on Broadway...will write about this experience tomorrow.

NYC--Day 3

Another breakfast at the hotel before we started our day. Our first stop was the Museum of Natural History. There was so much to see and do there but we didn't try to do it all...just most of it! We were able to see the Collision in the Cosmos at the Hayden Planetarium...a great presentation. Here is a sample of pictures from the Museum...

Notice the worker dusting the bones of the dinosaur!

Many of the figures from the movie Night at the Museum are not actually at the Museum!
After a bite of lunch there, we rode the tour bus around Central Park, through Harlem and other areas of Manhatten. Here is a sample of what we saw along the way.

Our next major stop was the Central Park Zoo. What fun we had there watching the animals.

A special treat was seeing the Sea Lions being fed.

We had a couple of stops to make in the area...one being FAO Schwarz..

Then we walked to St. Patrick's Cathredal, and since it was just about time for a mass, we didn't stay too long, and then went outside and set on the steps while we ate a snack.

We stopped by Rockerfeller Center and went to Top of the Rock to see more great views of the city.

We ate supper and then walked throught Times Square before we got ice cream again!

Big Apple, Day 2

We ate a good breakfast at the hotel and then began our day. We walked a few blocks to where we boarded the city tour bus...this is a hop off--hop on type of tour bus.
We stopped at the Empire State Building...and saw great views of the city even though it was a little hazy.
Here are some sights we saw from the double-decker bus.

Jackson wanted me to put this picture on the blog and tell you that this clock is the oldest mechanical clock in NYC and it has to be wound every 8 days. The rest have all been electrified.

We had lunch at "America's restaurant"...and saw where the calories are posted as well as the price. This practice is done in all restaurants here...sure makes you think before ordering.

We went to Battery Park and got our tickets for the ferry ride to Liberty Island where we could see the Statue of Liberty.

As we got closer to the island, you could really feel the importance of this precious lady.
As we walked around the statue, we had a tour with a Park Ranger and Jackson worked through a booklet and became a Jr. Ranger...badge and all! We learned about different parts of the statue and their meaning. One bit of trivia...there are 7 spikes on her crown and they represent the 7 continents and the 7 oceans.

We then boarded the ferry again and went to Ellis Island. This is place where immigrants first landed in America.

As we were returning to Battery Park, the rains approached. They arrived before we got back to our stop, so we were given these beautiful pieces of rain wear!

We were fairly soaked by the time we got back to the hotel so we had pizza in the room!

New York, New York

We are on a trip to NYC...Jackson's third grade trip. We left Cleveland this morning

and flew from Chattanooga to Atlanta and then on the New York

We arrived at the hotel, unpacked and then walked a couple of blocks to Times Square. Lots of hustle and bustle in the city.

We stopped by one of the stops on Jackson's list...Toys R Us. He had heard from a friend that they had a life-size dinosaur and he wanted to see it.

I think that we walked every aisle in the store! So many toys...so little time.

We were getting hungry and stopped at

for great meals...pasta, fish and chicken.

We strolled around Times Square a little more

and as we headed back to the hotel, we HAD to stop for a little dessert!

A great ending to the start of a great trip.
